Location: Virtual
***This is part 1 of a 2-part training. You must register & complete both sessions in order***
Prerequisite: Indoor Overnight Training
Sessions 1 and 2 are live virtual trainings where you learn the camping fundamentals you will put into practice with your troop. Attendance and completion of both sessions is required to be trained in Camping Skills.
Optional: join us for Camping Skills In-Person Workshop, a hands-on skills training, to enhance the skills learned in the virtual sessions. You must attend Camping Skills, Sessions 1 and 2 before attending this optional class.
To participate in any overnight camping experience or practice any outdoor skills, at least one adult must be trained in Camping Skills and must be present for all outdoor-related activities. Camping Skills is designed to give you the skills and knowledge needed to prepare your girls for a backyard overnight, service unit encampment, car camping trip, or other event utilizing outdoor skills (fire, knives/hatchets, outdoor cooking, etc.). Please take this class 8-10 weeks before you attend your first camping activity to allow proper planning progression and paperwork approval.
Session 1 Covers: Leave No Trace concepts, the Ten Essential categories of gear needed for safe outdoor adventures, general wilderness safety, emergency procedures and planning, and knife and hatchet safety. We’ll also review the basic information you need to select, use, and maintain your tents.
*Not included in this training: indoor overnights, compartmentalized overnights, and extended travel. For additional training in these topics, complete: Indoor Overnight Training and/or Domestic Troop Travel.
