Robotics

Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles (GSGLA) has a proud history of supporting all-girl teams in the various levels of competition offered through FIRST ( For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) with the goals of encouraging more girls into STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) careers and gender equity in our global society. FIRST is a global program created to get kids excited about science and technology. Programs include FIRST LEGO League Jr., FIRST LEGO League, and FIRST Tech Challenge.

Our 2019-2020 competitive season ended abruptly with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, as it became unsafe to gather in large groups and Stay-At-Home mandates were implemented across the region. GSGLA is committed to following local county guidelines and national health directives, taking all reasonable precautions to limit potential exposure for girls, volunteers, and families. Therefore, we have decided to suspend all sponsored robotics team programs through the 2020-2021 fiscal year. We will continue to monitor developments regarding small group gatherings and will modify accordingly, as circumstances change.

Robots and Fun! – Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL)
Daisies–Brownies (ages 6–9)

GSGLA’s Junior FIRST LEGO League (Jr.FLL) program introduces teams of girls to robotics before they commit to FLL. It is a hands-on program designed to capture young children’s inherent curiosity and features a real-world challenge to be solved by research, critical thinking, and imagination. Note: At this level, girls do not yet build robots.

Robots and More! – FIRST LEGO League (FLL)
Juniors–Cadettes (ages 9–14)

In Robots and More!, girls participate in the FIRST LEGO League (FLL) robotics competition. FLL utilizes theme-based challenges to engage kids in research, problem solving, and engineering. Each FLL challenge involves two areas: the robotics areas focuses on a team’s ability to design, build, and program a robot that accomplishes specific missions; and the research project area focuses on a team’s ability to research a real-life problem and create a unique solution for it.

Robots! Robots! Robots! – FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC)
Seniors–Ambassadors (ages 14–18)

The Robots! Robots! Robots! program provides teams of girls the opportunity to participate in the FTC robotics competition. FTC is designed for those who want to compete head-to-head, using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams.
